PUBLIC POLICY MEETS PUBLIC SURVEILLANCE

This research examines cases of several ‘smart cities’ deploying camera technologies, particularly those augmented by AI and video data capture. Constituent groups including technology companies, city government employees, a variety citizen both directly indirectly shape the policies for using these systems they produce, presaging how society might deal with escalating presence Internet Things. The social shaping approach contributes to research's conceptual foundations while political economy perspective frames consideration ethical dynamics in play. study investigates seven urban communities frame articulate values dangers such operating networked environments. Using archival from official documents, press, local State ordinances, concludes that police interests have been significant drivers systems, alongside new environmental management promises improved cost savings. Public engagement practices vary, but general are either nonexistent or anemic.
